Biography

Lisa Schenke

Lisa Schenke was inspired to write her first book, "Without Tim: A Son’s Fall to Suicide, A Mother’s Rise from Grief," as she recovered from the death of her oldest son at age 18. As Lisa reflected on her personal growth, her family’s progress, and the trauma that her community was facing due a suicide contagion during the early years after Tim’s death, she realized she had a story to tell. She also wanted to share facts and feelings about the loving child Tim was and the struggles he experienced.

Lisa was involved in the "Hold On" suicide prevention fundraising efforts in 2009 and 2010 to benefit 2NDFLOOR Youth Helpline, a New Jersey statewide program. She was also very active in fundraising and promoting the first annual Jersey Shore American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) Out of the Darkness Walk in 2011, where she spoke as a suicide survivor. This walk was awarded the "Most Outstanding First Year Walk" at the national level. In the summer of 2012 Lisa and a friend implemented You’re Designed to Shine, a program to inspire young women to identify their dreams, have faith, and develop the tools to achieve their goals. Lisa also spoke at a University of Medicine and Dentistry (UMDNJ) suicide postvention training program in 2012 and was featured on NBCNews.com in a piece titled "NJ town recovers from teen suicide cluster."

Since the release of Without Tim in the summer of 2013, Lisa has had numerous speaking engagements including keynote speaker at the 2013 Call of Hope Gala of CONTACT We Care, the crisis hotline and suicide prevention trainer headquartered in Westfield, NJ. Lisa was the Honored Guest at the 2014 Silent Samaritan Luncheon, an annual event which benefits the Samaritan Center at the Jersey Shore. She was also honored by a central Jersey nonprofit organization, Miles for Smiles, for her advocacy work in suicide prevention in June of 2014.

A New Jersey native, Lisa now resides in Brick, NJ, New Jersey, four miles from the ocean. After graduating from Montclair State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Math, she worked as a computer programmer, systems analyst and project manager at AT&T for eighteen years. Lisa later became certified as a personal fitness trainer with World Instructor Training School (W.I.T.S.) and has been training clients one-on-one and teaching senior fitness classes since 2002.

Lisa loves spending time with her family and living at the shore. She is enjoying every moment with her two grandsons, Luke Timothy and Dylan Richard. She is an avid cyclist and loves being outdoors, sunshine, chocolate, and her two dogs Henrik and Walter. Lisa enjoys traveling, home decorating, and reading mysteries, any type of life-lesson story, and stories with strong female heroines. She is an obsessive planner who loves the preparation and anticipation as much as the actual event itself!
