The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) holds Out of the Darkness Community Walks to raise awareness and to raise money for suicide prevention. Each walk is 3-5 miles long. The first annual southern Monmouth County walk was held at the Sea Girt Army Camp in Sea Girt, NJ on October 8, 2011. More than 450 walkers participated and our team “Timfinite,” led by Pete Schenke, achieved our goal by raising more than $2000 and was the winning team! We walked in honor of 5 local boys who lost their lives to suicide: Tim Schenke, Andrew Clark, Joe Calton, Matt Caughey and Kyle Craig. This walk will become an annual event and we hope to increase participation and fundraising each year.
The 2014, 4th annual Jersey Shore Out of the Darkness Walk, held in Manasquan, NJ, was phenomenal! We not only reached our goal of raising $50,000 for the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, but far exceeded it by raising over $92,000 with 909 walkers participating!! What a fantastic day had by all. Thank you to Leggett’s for hosting and supplying lunch, to the members of Team Timfinite, and to all teams represented on 9/20/14.
